Looking Toward the Future: 1993-Today

In the fall of 1993, Mayfield Junior School welcomed Mrs. Stephanie Griffin as head of school. Mrs. Griffin was committed to maintaining academic excellence and sustaining the family spirit of the school. Under her guidance, Mayfield Junior School continued to build on the traditions established and supported by previous generations of students. A commitment to “Actions not Words” increased community outreach and service. Providing space for the art and music programs allowed student potential to be explored. A dream came true in 1998 when a multipurpose building was completed adding a gymnasium, chapel, art studio, music rooms and an expanded after school program to the campus.
By the turn of the century, the success of the school had pushed class size to its absolute maximum. In an effort to reduce class size and renew the school’s commitment to academic excellence, Mrs. Griffin and the Board of Trustees took on an ambitious plan to increase the number of classes in grades K-4 from two to three with only 18 students per class. In order to accomplish this goal and provide the additional classrooms needed, a major remodel of the south campus was necessary. With the generous support of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus and parents, alumni and friends and the enthusiasm and hard work of the entire community, the new south campus opened in the fall of 2004. The remodel added twelve state-of-the-art classrooms, a new performing arts center, and welcoming courtyards and open spaces. The original Convent was restored and converted to office space.

In 2008, Joseph J. Gill became headmaster. Joe’s vision and generous spirit inspired a new perspective and positive support within the community.  Joe's desire to contribute to a welcoming, joyous and inclusive community was noteworthy. He guided the Strategic Design and Master Planning, setting the stage for Mayfield’s future success. He led the renovation of our Holy Child Chapel, substantially grew our Endowment and financial resources and enhanced the commitment to faculty through increased compensation and access to professional development opportunities.

In July 2019, Mr. Joe Sciuto was welcomed as our next head of school. With close to two decades in faith-based and independent education, Joe comes to Mayfield as an experienced and passionate administrator and innovator.

In the 2021-2022 school year, Mayfield Junior School celebrates  90 years of Holy Child education in Pasadena. Generations of Mayfield students have been guided by the vision of the Sisters who opened Mayfield’s doors in 1931, encouraged to find their unique potential and challenged to look beyond themselves in service to others. The motto “Actions not Words” continues to inspire students far beyond their years as a Mayfield student.
