First Grade

Building a Strong Foundation

First grade provides developmentally appropriate experiences with particular attention to process rather than product. The primary focus is to develop students’ skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. First graders are active participants in hands-on activities, which foster creativity and excitement for learning. In a nurturing environment, children become self-motivated, independent learners. Teachers have high expectations for attainable goals and a focus on developing a strong growth mindset, setting up a solid foundation for the later school years. Cooperative learning activities help ensure that both social and academic growth are fostered concurrently.

Highlights of the first grade year include reading with the Superkids, participating in a spring musical, religious songs and prayers, and understanding more about important American symbols. One of the biggest highlights in first grade is our service-learning project about the community. We learn all about what a community is, who our community helpers are, and most importantly, what we can do to help. We even build our own community!
